5 Tips for an epic destination Session
The first question you may ask is what is a destination session? We pitched this unique idea to our clients several months ago where we travel to another city (anywhere 50 miles or more from our office) for a unique photo shoot experience with some of the most unique imagery we can’t get locally.
Our client’s reaction was “wooow, that sounds cool!”
At that point we knew were on to something special for our client experience for engagements, high-school senior sessions and bridal. We also offer destination weddings but prep for that is a bit different; we’ll discuss that in a separate post. Here’s 5 tips to help you get the most out of your epic destination experience.
1. Pack light
On our recent trip to Las Vegas, we flew Southwest which is our preferred flight because we get 2 free checked bags as well as 2 carry-ons. If you’re thinking of saving a few bucks and going with a cheaper airline, be mindful of the additional baggage fees. For us, we can fit our camera gear in two small carry on bags and one large suitcase for clothing is typically enough for a couple days.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll want a different pair of shoes each day, lol but try to keep it at a minimum of 3. Try not to get overwhelmed.
2. Time Management
When traveling to popular cities like Los Angeles, Las Vegas, or New York city, be sure to factor in the time for traveling to your rental location. On our recent trip to Las Vegas, we had to take a shuttle to the rental location. The shuttles ran about every 10 or so minutes. However, if you bought your rental from an off-site rental location, you had to take a second shuttle. We used an off-site rental company and it was about an hour total time in between waiting for the first shuttle to actually driving off in our car.
Once you get your vehicle, expect traffic to be crazy! Las Vegas wasn’t bad at all, but New York City and Hollywood, CA was definitely slow motion. Make sure you have an amazing playlist and enjoy the ride!
3. Epic locations
One of the benefits of travel/destination sessions is being able to capture unique imagery you can’t get locally. What’s the point of going to a lame park when you can get that in your home town? Think mountains, canyons or historical landmarks that will make your images stand out.
We take care of this scouting process for our clients. This is a one of a kind experience for our clients and we don’t want them stressed about having to look for locations, outfits, etc. so we take care of all the minor details.
4. Fashionable Wardrobe
We tell all our clients, three essential elements that will make or break a shoot is location, wardrobe and creative direction. Imagine being in the mountains or on a white sandy beach with your hair blowing in the wind. You wouldn’t want simple jeans and a blouse. Go the extra mile and shop for that fashionable dress you’ve been eying. Bring multiple outfits as you will likely be photographed in multiple locations.
We tell our clients to bring at least five outfits. We may not have time to photograph them all, but one thing you do want is options. We personally offer a boutique experience in which we offer a styling service and a high fashion dress for all our clients.
5. Enjoy the city

After my shoots I’m always starving so we decided to treat our clients to lunch as part of the unique experience with Timeless Amor. After your adventure with your photographer, definitely take time to enjoy the rest of the city – visit landmarks, check out a wine tasting overlooking the city at night or relax on a sunny beach while your friends are freezing in Wisconsin.
